Alan provided French tuition to my son weekly for a year before his A level. He was aspiring to study languages at university and aiming high but having taken his GCSE a year early and in lockdown he lacked confidence and was considerably behind where he needed to be. Alan worked very hard with him and helped to grow his confidence and ability so that he was able to score 89% at A level, just 0.25% off an A*. We were all delighted with this result and my son secured his place to read languages at Bristol. Alan was a great source of advice on ways to develop language skills outside the curriculum and also gave my son valuable insight on how he could use his languages in future careers. I have been taking lessons with Carmela for almost a year and feel that I have learned a great deal. Carmela paces the lessons very well, and there is an excellent balance of language learning, including reading and listening comprehension, grammar, writing and speaking. As a native speaker, Carmela is able to discuss the nuances of language use and provides really interesting insights into Italian culture. She constantly challenges me but is also encouraging, especially when I become frustrated with myself! Carmela is happy to focus on particular aspects or topics when appropriate or requested. So, for example, before going to Sardinia with my family last year, we practised useful vocabulary and phrases when ordering in a restaurant. The flexibility and focus of one-to-one lessons mean that progress is much faster and motivation remains high. Carmela is a true linguist and lover of languages and that shines through. I started Italian lessons with Carmela as an adult learner. I need to do an aptitude test for nationality eventually so it was important that I find the right teacher. Carmela has been great- her teaching method is clear and concise. She is always happy to stop and answer the many questions I have even when I go off-piste into something that's not part of the lesson. I particularly appreciate the recap notes of the lesson that she immediately send over after the lesson is done. She also puts homework on google classroom which helps in keeping everything organised. She is also very patient which is very important in a tutor. What is French?

Passing an exam is not the only reason to learn French. A good grasp of the language will change your holiday experience forever! French is spoken in 29 different countries worldwide and has retained its importance in schools despite the rise of Spanish. Many of our teachers are native French speakers and can support French at all levels, including just conversational, and can provide high-quality tuition for Primary and Junior levels, as well as prepare children towards 11+, 13+, Common Entrance or for GCSE, IGCSE, IB and A-Level Examinations, across all the major Examination Boards.

GCSE French Tuition

The GCSE French exam assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills in French. It is divided into two tiers: Foundation (grades 1-5) and Higher (grades 4-9). The syllabus includes themes like identity and culture, local and global areas of interest, and future studies and employment. Each skill is tested through specific tasks, such as responding to spoken and written French, writing essays, and engaging in spoken conversations. Preparation involves extensive practice in all four areas, focusing on vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension.

A-Level French Tuition

The A-Level French exam is designed to develop advanced skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking French. It includes themes like social issues and trends, political and artistic culture, and grammar. The assessment comprises three papers: Paper 1 focuses on listening, reading, and writing, Paper 2 on writing, and Paper 3 on speaking. The exam aims to foster an in-depth understanding of French-speaking cultures and enhance communication skills in complex contexts.

Home Tuition: Involves a French tutor coming to your home to provide one-on-one instruction. This offers convenience as you don't need to travel. Online Tuition: This can take place anywhere with an internet connection. Small Group Tuition: Typically with between 2 to 4 children, and often occurs in a physical location such as your home, though it can also be online.

Individual Attention
Home Tuition: Offers the highest level of individual attention, as the French tutor focuses solely on one student. Online Tuition: Still allows for one-to-one attention, but it may be slightly less personal than home tuition due to potential distractions. Small Group Tuition: Offers less individual attention as the French tutor must divide their time and attention among multiple students.

Cost
Home Tuition: This tends to be more expensive because it involves one-on-one teaching, and the French tutor is required to travel to your home. Online Tuition: Often more affordable than home tuition as your French tutor does not need to travel but may still cost more than small group tuition. Small Group Tuition: Generally, this is the most cost-effective option, as the costs are shared among several families.

Flexibility
Home Tuition: Offers flexibility in terms of scheduling and curriculum, as your French tutor will only be working with your child. Online Tuition: Provides flexibility in terms of location and may offer a wider selection of French tutors. Small Group Tuition: Lessons will be more difficult to schedule as lesson times will have to fit in with other families.
